SAILING AROUND THE WORLD WITH SPIRIT OF ARGO

Panama to French Polynesia – Panama Basin – Day 8

Position: We are sailing south and then north west through the Panama Basin. The body of water in the Pacific Ocean that separates Panama from the Galapagos Islands. At the moment we have to admit, we are not getting very far N 6′ 03.00′ W 81′ 26.60′

Mileage: We are tacking back and forth, with the wind coming from the South West, so difficult to calculate any daily rate right now. But generally speaking, WE ARE NOT GETTING VERY FAR

Number of miles to go: 3568nm to go of approx. 3850nm (That is only if we were able to sail straight there)

Fish count: Two more tuna, but had to give up as the sea state has gotten a bit ‘frisky’. Not very easy to get the fish in or cleaned at the moment, so a hold on fishing. The count is 3 Mahi Mahi, 2 Cero and 6 tuna. One Marlin that we were happy got away!

CRAP WEATHER
You have bad days, you have good days. Today is a bad day for the crew of s/v Spirit of Argo. We had squalls all through the night. We had to put another reef in the main to keep things ‘under control’ when the stronger winds hit. Instead of brightening up, the squalls continued through the day. This has stirred up the sea state a bit.

UNFAVORABLE WINDS
Unfortunately we are still getting winds on the nose. With the wind coming from the exact direction we want to go, we are still tacking back and forth. We must also have an adverse current against us as we seem to be only able to get a track due South or North West. The result is our progress today is dismal. So everyone aboard is ‘down in the dumps’. We got a weather prediction from our mates Mike and Floss and we can expect the same for at least 3 more days. RUBBISH NEWS!

I do my doggy duty to cheer up the humans, and at least the lightning storms are gone. Everyone is healthy and we are still sailing safely.
Hopefully tomorrow will be a brighter day and we will get some more favorable winds.
