SAILING AROUND THE WORLD WITH SPIRIT OF ARGO

Passage – Guanaja, Honduras to Porvenir, Panama – Day 3

Just a quick blog update today as the seas are very rough and I hate being stuck down stairs at the Navigation table writing you guys.

All is well on the good ship Spirit of Argo. All systems go.
The winds built through the night as we left the protection of the Miskito Channel. The shallow waters here made the seas choppy as the winds increased. Although we had enjoyed the protected waters in the channel, we were also a little nervous about pirates. So it was a bitter sweet goodbye. We saw a lot of boat traffic through the night as we headed off towards San Andreas. Big shrimping and fishing boats along with cargo ships. All following the drop off contour of the sea shelf off the coast of Nicaragua.

We had a few short rain sqaualls in the morning, but now the sky’s have cleared and it is bright and sunny. The better light to see the big waves. It really is not ‘that’ rough out here. Only the occasional wave pounds the side of the boat or rolls us sideways. Today is meant to be the worst day. The wind and waves are meant to ease through the weekend. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

We are ‘spitting’ distance from the anchorage at Isla de San Andreas. It would be so easy to stop in there and take a reprieve from the sea. I suppose, if we were not on a bit of schedule, it would be fun to visit the island. But the winds are meant to turn south easterly, against us, by Monday. We would be stuck there until the next northerly front came down. Who knows when that would be, or if it would be any more pleasant. We have been fortunate to have the lovely sailing we have had so far. A day or two of rough weather will not kill us. Just wish it would stop rolling about long enough for me to do my business in comfort. You humans have it easy. I have to do a balancing act that becomes quite comical in these conditions. I hear you laughing at me from there. Easy when you are all seated dry and comfortable.

Just goes to show you this cruising lifestyle is not all sunny day, sandy beaches and rum cocktails. 250nm to go before I see any of those. Wish me luck! end:
