SAILING AROUND THE WORLD WITH SPIRIT OF ARGO

Bahamas, Exumas, Wax Cay Cut – On the look out for New Years Eve dinner

The Bahamas

With the morning light, and after my run on the beach of course, we headed off into the calm settled waters of the Great Bahama Bank to Wax Cay Cut.

Sailing in the lee (protection) of the Exuma Cays makes the shallow waters here on the Bank very calm.

It is so calm here the humans even got a game of backgammon in.

Although they should really be looking out for obstructions.  The Great Bahama Bank is very shallow and riddled with moving sand banks.  All of which are easy to spot……if someone was out front looking!

The humans anchored us off on a sand bank on one side of a cut (Wax Cay Cut) through the Exuma Cays.  Here the waters of the Atlantic Ocean flowed with each passing tide bringing fresh nutrients to the organisms inhabiting the coral reefs on the other side of the cut.

Great for snorkelling, but alas, no beach for me to run on

The humans did not waste any time jumping into their kayaks and crossing over to the reefs on the other side of the cut for a snorkel.

You can always tell a reef system is healthy when you spot some top predators.

But do not worry readers, unless you have a bloody fish in your hand, they swim away when approached.
But do not worry readers, unless you have a bloody fish in your hand, they swim away when approached.  They really are more afraid of us they we are of them.

Speaking of top predators, the humans had an ulterior motive for visiting this reef.  They were hoping to bag some lobster for New Years eve dinner.

And they were proudly successful

I hope they are going to share
