SAILING AROUND THE WORLD WITH SPIRIT OF ARGO

Landrail Point, Crooked Island-waiting out some strong winds

We sailed, in company, from Attwood Harbour NW to Landrail Point.

It was a very pleasant short trip along the beaches of the north coast of Crooked Island.

As we rounded the point and Portland Harbour we could see the lighthouse on Bird Rock.

The humans were also lucky, and caught me my dinner.

CERO (Scomberomorus regalis). The same family of fish as Mackerals and Wahoo.

We anchored up on the sandy shores of Landrail Point.

Enough time to fit in a quick anchor check and snorkel.

You can get a little closer to shore at this anchorage.

The beach is lovely for swimming here, but you will have to do your ‘shell hunting’ under the boat, where you will find multitudes of sand dollars.

I'm happy

We watched dolphins come right into shore searching the shallow reefs for food.  We decided to walk into the local town in search of ours.

We're on the road to no where

Our cruising guide-book told us there was a settlement south of us with a grocery store.  We decided to follow the road, that ran parallel to the beach, in search of a village they called Pittstown.

We found a small village quay where the mail boat visits the island

We found a small deserted petrol station
We found a small deserted petrol station.  But it did appear that one pump worked.

We also found the local 'grocery store'.
Between the petrol garage and the village dock we found the local ‘grocery store’.

But what we did not find in the village was people. Neither the petrol station or the grocery shack had any opening times on them.   It was late Saturday morning and not a soul about.  Sat around in the shade for half an hour, thinking someone might come by or open one of the shops, but no such luck.

This time in the season, you must have to ‘prearranged’ to have them ‘open shop’ or know when the mail boat is bringing in new supplies.

No worries, we still have food on the boat and the strong winds should die down in a few days time.  We are hoping for some settled weather so we can visit the smaller islands on our way North.

CORRECTION:

After I posted this blog we discovered a few things.

First: The village (minus 2 people) are Seventh Day Adventists,  This means that Friday night and Saturday are their holy days, and everything is shut.

Second: There is a ‘fairly decent’ grocery store a 10 minute walk east to the edge of town.  You can get dry goods, some fruits, vegetables and baked goods.  The local ‘fig’ bananas are fantastic and the prices are local.

Third: The villagers are very, very friendly and happy to help.  I struggled to walk anywhere as everyone stopped to offer me a lift.  They were very interested in us.

Before I go, I have a little something extra for you.

Got the humans to do a little ‘cleaning up’ of memory cards and they found some old pictures of me as a pup.  Thought I would add them to the end, just to prove I was not always a ‘great adventurer’.
