SAILING AROUND THE WORLD WITH SPIRIT OF ARGO

Cuba, Cayo Rabihorcado – And then there were none

We have been very fortunate with the weather. The winds have remained light and out of the west, making the anchorage off the big white beach here at Cayo Rabihorcado a perfect anchorage. So perfect we are joined by many fishing boats.

A small crew on a boat joined us the first day. I think they thought we were a little strange doing all our laundry and stayed well away from us. After the humans finished the laundry in the morning I let them loose to play. They found an abundance of fascinating coral heads lining the southern end of the bay. Great big French Angel Fish, Porgies and Lobster where just a few of the inhabitants occupying the healthy reefs here. The humans come back to the boat for lunch, with dreams of great foraging in the afternoon, when a much larger fishing boat with a crew of 7-8 arrived and dropped anchor right where the best hunting was. To their dismay they promptly through down hand lines and jumped overboard to collect the lobster. It is there country and their livelihood after all.

At least we had the great beach so we were in no hurry to leave. The guys on the ‘big’ fishing boat were nice enough. They paddled over to our boat in one of their skiffs and tried to tell us that the Frontera were trying to contact us on the VHF. We barely recognized our boat name with their ‘Spanish’ rendition, but they did find someone who spoke some English. ‘Spirit of Argo, you OK?’ ‘Yes’ we said. ‘Spirit of Argo, you not move?’ ‘Yes’ we said. ‘You OK?’ they asked again. ‘Yes’ we said ‘We go to Cayo Granada tomorrow’. ‘OK’ they said. It is ‘kind of’ reassuring that communist ‘big brother’ is keeping an eye on us. At least if we did run into any trouble we knew they would know.

We hoped to stay longer at this wonderful Cay, but the winds were forecast to shift direction and strengthen, so we had to either move to the back side of the Cay or move to another Cay with protection from a North Eastern wind. After the smaller fishing vessel asked us for some fresh water in the morning we headed West to Cayo Media Luna. Maybe there we would find some Lobster?
