SAILING AROUND THE WORLD WITH SPIRIT OF ARGO

Black Point, Great Guana Cay, Exumas, Bahamas – A visit to a ‘real’ Bahamian town

I do not let my humans laze about.

We lifted anchor and sailed from White Point to Black Point.  Just a little way north up Great Guana Cay.

Just a short sail on the Exuma Bank, so Roy was happy.

We had to ‘change venue’ because the wind was changing from north east to south.  The anchorage at Black Point afforded us a little more protection from any waves.

It may have been a short sail.  But that is no excuse not to have our traditional toast to a safe passage.

My humans look for any excuse to have a beer. They are working on a Bahamian extra strength beer now, Kalik Gold.

At the end of the anchorage there is a large sand bank exposed during low tide.  You can usually find lots of sand dollars here.

It is also lots of fun the run about on

Unless of course they are trying to get to Happy Hour.  Which they have for cruisers every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in the village.

So I got left behind as they searched for the promised half price beers and rum punch.

Black Point is NOT a tourist town.  It is a proper Bahamian settlement.  But saying that they do have a few restaurants, bars and stores to attract cruisers to visit.

They have a good selection (compared to most Bahamian convenient stores) and although the prices are a little higher then George Town, it is still much cheaper than the touristy Staniel Cay.

But grocery shopping was not on my humans minds.

Unfortunately Guinness Foreign Export was not on the list of beer on offer at half price.  No problem as the bartender introduced them to a new Bahamian beer just as strong.

If you are going to start drinking this stuff then you have to line the stomach with something.

Big fat boy burgers. It would have been cracked conch, but they were out.

Of course everything is served in ‘Bahamian time’.  So the boys were well away by the time they got something in their stomachs.

As they were the only ‘cruisers’ in the place they felt obliged to entertain the locals when the disco started.

It is remarkable what a few beers can do to their courage.

They are so going to regret the hangovers in the morning!
